Kotenka's Background for Shadowrun Denver
Kotenka Breski was born on February 15th, 2044 in Saint Agnus hospital,
Baltimore, Maryland, UCAS. He was the second and youngest child in the Breski
family-- innately getting some of that younger child charm that the youngest
sibling gets. Part of this was due in fact that he had blue eyes and dark
hair-- an appealing look of American (or UCAS) Beauty. As time rolled on that
boyish charm would fade to maturity.
James Breski, a man following in his father's footsteps to uphold the
law, was Kotenka's older brother. Most of the charisma and leadership was put
in the first child-- he was a natural leader. Kotenka, on the other hand, was
more of an individualist. He has his own way of thinking, his own way of doing
things, and he refuses to simply do as others do in order to fit in. That, in
part, is what made him such an apt pupil of the arts.
The best friends that Kotenka had growing up was Marcus Gragorin and
his brother. Marcus was more of his brother's friend, but due to the amount
they saw each other, they all got along rather well. As well as could be with
all things considered. Kotenka is the step-son of James. James' original
mother died in childbirth due to complications. So Kotenka's older brother had
some angst for his little brother. They loved each other like brothers, but
there was always a gap between them. Marcus normally bridged that gap-- the
trio were inseparable. Marcus was the big strong guy of the group, James was
the social one, and Kotenka was the smart one.
All three of them were rather involved in the martial arts. Marcus
followed the Chinese art of Kung Fu. James followed the Japanese art of
Aikido. Kotenka followed the Indonesian art of Pentjak-Silat. They all cross
trained and became proficient in one or more weapons. Marcus chose the staff,
James chose the clubs, Kotenka chose the katana. However, Marcus and James
were trying to be Lone Star or Knight Errant and they went to the shooting
range often when they weren't out having fun. Kotenka rarely, if ever, went
with them. He preferred to be able to get in close than to fire a gun. It had
to do with the classes they took as well.
Aikido and Kung-Fu are rather widely spread arts. Pentjak-Silat was
much more scarce. The young Kotenka's class was only four people and an
instructor. It demanded a lot of time from it's students. Being dutiful and
respectable, Kotenka made sure that he had the time to put forward towards his
martial studies as well as his academic. If his mind was ever at rest he would
have to be asleep or in meditation-- otherwise the activity would start to
At fourteen, around the age that puberty struck, his body went through
some more changes that expected. His sensei was aware of his potential, but
even the Awakening of Kotenka was frightening to behold. During one day in
class the four pupils were put into sparring with dead (dull) katana blades.
Kotenka was struck hard with a particular blow-- grounding him in a daze. He
blacked out, but the other students and sensei report that his entire body
flashed aglow so that his aura was clearly visible to the mundane and even
hurt the sensei's eyes to watch since he was Awakened. The surge of strength
lasted only moments, but hell hath no fury to compare what was unleashed on
his sparring partner. The pupil was put in a hospital for a month and would
have been killed if the sensei did not intervene.
Things started to get very edgy after that. James stopped talking to
his little step-brother as much. Marcus wasn't able to help-- his only words
to Kotenka was that he had a steady girlfriend that took up most of his time.
So it didn't hurt much when Kotenka had to leave home.
The sensei was going to step up the training. Three out of the four of
his pupils had awakened. The fourth left on his own accord-- out of jealousy
(perhaps to vow revenge on the others one day). He visited the families of his
pupils to request guardianship and to move them to a new dojo in Denver. There
they would train harder and focus on their newly awakened powers.
Kotenka had no problem leaving Baltimore behind. He was sixteen at the
time and never held a real job down. This, he felt, was to be his life.
Kotenka had a rather individualistic sense of honor. Don't kill women and
children. Don't attack the innocent. Combatants are combatants and are treated
that way-- attacking from the back is the only way to get the element of
surprise and hit certain vital points taught in Pentjak-Silat. Self defense
means using reasonable force, but if the enemy has a gun (and in 2061 who
doesn't) you counter with your blade. Killing is not wrong, it is a cycle of
life. Not living is wrong, no spirit deserves to be confined.
It was the last thought that began to change Kotenka's mind about life.
After fourteen months of living in Denver, the seventeen year old adept
started to ponder more than just martial arts. He was missing something in
life: a challenge, fun, city life. So he donned a macho look and started to go
out into the city with his free time.
There he met a lot of people, had a lot of fun, and learned a lot about
himself. He was still a young and energetic child. Kotenka shouldn't be slowly
pining away in a dojo when he should be applying himself! So what could he
do.. Join a gang? Too violent. Join the enforcement agency? Too binding.
Shadowrunning-- doesn't have to be bad, its an on/off sort of job, and it pays
well. Kotenka found himself his first part-time job.
The problem is that he has a legal SIN. After he gets the cash, his
first goal is to get a fake one. With the sword he doesn't have to worry with
bullet casings, but it still a high risk bit. Risk-- how ironic that he was
looking for excitement. He loves the thrill of battle, but is calm and
controlled within it. Kotenka hates egotistical people that think only of
themselves-- innately some city-people and some corpers.
Religiously Kotenka is Roman Catholic because his father was one as
well. He adores the pure theology of the church but is sketchy on a few
ordeals-- like faith via fear. The faith via love he enjoys. Philosophically
he follows the Tao, a very deep writing that he models his actions around when
he isn't having fun in moderation'.
